Diving paradise in Sangalaki with KM Raja Manta

The White Manta diving team has returned to the stunning diver's paradise of Sangalaki, Maratua & Kakaban, a string of Islands off the east coast of Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. This little known destination is a true hidden treasure with abundant marine life, action packed diving, beautiful island excursions and truly unbelieveable sunsets. So far this season the crew and guests of KM Raja Manta have been treated to some amazing highlights both above and below; read on for our Cruise Leader's trip report from the second trip of the season....

Lembeh,Bangka,Sangihe Island 29-Apr 06-May-17

For this trip Raja Manta made a cruise to an area where virtually no other boats operate anymore. We used our long term dive masters Anto and Stanny's experience in the Sangihe islands, where they had dived over 7 years ago. The whole region proved to be stunning both above & below the waves, with mighty smoking Volcanoes standing guard over azure blue waters packed with amazing marine life. AFter this trip we cannot wait to return!

Raja Manta Explores New Waters

This trip would bring to an end another terrific season in the magical diver’s paradise of Raja Ampat and whilst we are always sad to leave such an amazing place we knew that after two days exploring the best of Raja Ampat we would be sailing across the Halmehera Sea to Manado and the Raja Manta crew were just as excited as our guests to explore a new route that very few dive boats follow!

Raja Manta 10-17th March Raja Ampat trip.

March is arguably when Raja Ampat’s marine life really peaks. This time of year can bring some quite heavy plankton blooms but this plankton along with the strong currents & upwellings that feed the area are the lifeblood of Raja Ampat and one of the main reasons it is so very rich in marine life & bio-diversity. These conditions also encourage plenty of big fish & marine megastars!

Hammertime onboard the Raja Manta

It’s that time of year again, Hammertime! Every year as the Komodo season comes to an end the thoughts and dreams of our guests and crew turn to the allure of the magical, remote and beautiful Banda Sea. Filled with highlights both above and below the waves, guests from all over the world come to enjoy amazing sunsets, stunning Volcanic islands, clear blue waters, thriving coral reefs, diverse marine life and, of course, the chance to encounter huge schools of scalloped hammerheads which can be found in these waters in massive numbers. Over the last few seasons we have had great success in locating the hammers, but of course nothing in nature is guaranteed and so as the first Banda sea trip of the season begun, one question hung in the air… would we enjoy a spectacular “hammertime?” This year, for the first time, the trip would be onboard our KM Raja Manta (previously the White Manta) – recently renamed and relocated to Indonesia this would be her maiden voyage – and so hopes were high for a spectacular trip.

White Manta in Tioman 22nd-24th July 2016

As our 2016 Singapore season gets closer to it’s conclusion it’s easy to look back and marvel at how time truly does fly by! Throughout these past few months the WM Dive crew & our guests have had the privilege to enjoy some fantastic diving in both Malaysia and Indonesia, with conditions being better than average on every trip, of course the great company inbetween and after dives has also been out of this world!

White Manta & The Manta Trust

The Similan Islands in the North Andaman sea are known to be a Manta aggregation hotspot, with sightings of the elusive Giant Manta Ray relatively common at this time of the year.

Manta Madness in the Similans

So, we have reached the high season for Manta Ray sightings in the Similans!! This trip we were fortunate enough to have some incredible encounters with these underwater giants over multiple dives whilst enjoying stunning conditions above and below the waves!

WM National Day Long Weekend 07-10 August

The weekend of 07-09 August 2015 was a very special weekend for all Singaporeans as they proudly celebrated 50 years as an independent nation, from third world country to one of the most successful, developed nations in the world with an economy and GDP the envy of many more ‘established’ developed countries world wide.

'Water' lot of madness.. Songkhran on White Manta

Celebrating Songkhran the Thai New Year onboard MV White Manta

April not only signals the end of the Similan season in Thailand, it also ushers in the Thai new year, with the Songkhran festival. It is a wonderful time to visit Thailand as spirits run high, water fights explode on every street corner, the wether is hot and balmy and the frisson of change hangs in the air as the monsoon wet season approaches.

WMT CNY 19-25th Feb

This new lunar year marks the start of the Chinese year of the goat and White Manta was ready to celebrate the dawn of a New Year with a large Chinese contingent of divers led by our friend Zhang Huimin (or Yoyo as she likes to be called!) We also welcomed Ryan from the United states, Genie from South Korea, Patricia from Singapore and returning friends Dow, Dome and Mon from Thailand who brought along some new friends, Amp, Karn and Nan. It would seem that the Chinese New Year brought us some amazing luck, as this would turn out to be one of the most spectacular trips of the season!

Brazil, The United States of America, Canada, Germany, Japan and Korea.. this week’s multi national diving group again hailed from all corners of the globe, and what an amazing dive safari we were all to enjoy, as yet again the guests and crew of White Manta were lucky enough to dive with not one but two beautiful giant mantas at Koh Bon, here in the Similan Islands, Thailand!

WMT18 Similans 31st Jan-4th Feb 15

With Christmas and New year celebrations already a distant memory, the Thailand season onboard MV White Manta rolls on. The weather is beautiful, conditions underwater fantastic and the ‘Big Fish’ are around! This trip’s highlight, a stunning interaction with a Giant Manta cruising over Koh Bon ridge, was enjoyed by every guest onboard, providing a perfect post holiday season gift as we enter the second month of the year 2015.

Andaman & Similan islands WMT15

Whilst the White Manta’s usual home in Thailand is the world famous Similan Islands, occasionally we take our guests on a slightly longer safari which encompasses the Southern Phuket, Andaman sea dive sites of Hin Deng/Hin Muang, Koh Haa and Phi Phi before heading North and exploring the Similans themselves.

WMT 14

2015 is upon us, a New Year and White Manta is now two months into the Similan 2014/15 season! Despite a spell of windy weather over December the diving has already thrilled and satisfied guests from across the globe. We’ve had Mantas, Whale-sharks, even rare sightings of guitar sharks, whilst for macro lovers, seahorses, harlequin shrimp, pygmy pouch pipe horses, ghost pipefish and a multitude of nudibranch have kept the trigger fingers of underwater photographers busy all season!

WMS15 11-15 Oct 2013 - Whale Shark and Manta Ray at Acasta Wreck & Reef; Badas Islands and the Garden of Eden

A long weekend in Singapore can mean only one thing... A White Manta diving trip to little explored and remote diving destinations!!! This Hari Raya holiday was no exception, and for those lucky guests who joined us - it proved to be one of, if not THE best, trip of the season! On this longer 4D4N trip we set out from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal (TMFT) to the distant submerged reef of Batu Acasta; almost 150nm from Singapore in the azure Indonesian waters of the South China Sea.

WMS14 04-06 Oct 2013 - Amazing visibility at Tokong Malangbiru; Batu Kataoka and Igara wreck

A repeat fixture of last weekends’ trip to Anambas and the Igara wreck was on the cards for MV White Manta – but it wouldn’t be the same as the last week; because we hosted different guests and experienced different conditions!

Oct 4, 2013

WMS13 27-29 Sep 2013 - Stunning corals at Tokong Malangbiru; Batu Kataoka and Igara wreck

As the end of the Singapore season draws closer, our guests taking advantage of the last few diving weekends are rewarded with some outstanding diving! From the end of September until the end of October MV White Manta visits some of Indonesia’s islands in the South China Sea; and the world class wreck diving sites including ‘Seven Skies’ and ‘Igara’.

Jun 28, 2013

Sulu sea, Kapalai, Mabul and Sipadan

It was just over a year ago that the White Manta team confirmed a ‘special’ trip to the Sulu sea would take place in June 2013. Since the announcement most of the dive crew have been like kids waiting for Christmas, hardly believing that the chance to dive in one of the most famous destinations in the world could be described as ‘work.’ After a fantastic Thailand season, and a brief but rewarding few months in Layang Layang; finally! June 1st arrived and all the crew of White Manta were ready and eager to welcome aboard some familiar faces and new friends.

WMGFD 28-31 Mar 2013

A wonderful Easter holiday was enjoyed by all as MV White Manta temporarily resurrected its schedule in the South China Sea since returning from annual maintenance in dry dock, Phuket.

Mar 18, 2013

WMT24 16-18 Mar 2013

Mike Newman and Greg Reed 'followed on' for two trips; I swapped Greg from Heikki's group, with Mike from my group; for this trip. I figured they might enjoy a change; and Mike benefitted from a smaller group as Greg had on the previous trip. This would also be the last trip for our popular masseuse Dtik. I hope she can join us again in the future - if not just for her wacky hairbands!

Mar 15, 2013

WMT23 11-15 Mar 2012

Sigh! It is the last Similan island safari of the season. It is a rigorous and often hectic schedule on board MV White Manta, though the 4day / 4night with 24hr break between is an appealing routine. Thailand feels like home to me, and of course it is to our crew too.

This trip sees us return to Patong; so an inverse schedule was on the cards, starting at Tachai and finishing in the Similan islands.

Mar 10, 2013

WMT22 6-10 Mar 2013

MV White Manta had another large representative group from Hong Kong for this trip.

Mar 5, 2013

WMT21 1-5 Mar 2013

South Korea provided the majority of the guests this time out. Thanks to Duck and Peter of Dive Lab for recommending MV White Manta.

WMT20 24-28 Feb 2013

Our regular DM in Singapore: Glenn Wright, the mighty Springbok; joined this trip as DM and brought along his gorgeous partner: Jill, too. Jill lives and works in Singapore (save the travelling that goes with the job). She is originally from Georgia, USA. It was great to welcome Glenn into the team again, he added both professionalism and enthusiasm as a well seasoned veteran of scuba diving would.

Feb 24, 2013

WMT19 19-23 Feb 2013

Tristan Bellville and Oliver Fitch were returning freelance dive crew on this trip. Sadly, Hayami had to complete a visa run, thus the regular dive crew missed out on their "Chocolate Time”.

Feb 18, 2013

WMT18 14-18 Feb 2013

Amazing international mix of guests join us almost every trip on MV White Manta, and this was no exception.

WMCNY 9-13 Feb 2013

Gong Xi Fa Cai! Happy Chinese New Year from White Manta.

Dec 13, 2012

Similans 4-8 Dec 2012

Finally, our first sighting of Manta rays this Thailand season!! 3 of them at Koh Tachai. It was my first inspection trip as well with Sharon and Vivienne our youngest daughter.

Nov 9, 2012

South Andaman Sea, WMDAENG 05-09 Nov 2012

As the winter months close in around the Northern Hemisphere, the days get shorter and darker, long summer evenings are replaced by cold dark and frosty nights, while summer wardrobes of shorts and T-shirts are replaced by woolen hats, scarves and thick cosy coats. For the crew and customers of the MV White Manta the arrival of November means something entirely different... The start of the Similan Islands safari season here in sunny, tropical Thailand!

Hari Raya Haji weekend 25-28 Oct 2012

Bon Voyage Singapore! Here we are at the end of October and our Singapore season is over, after four fantastic months offering dive trips around local Indonesian and Malaysian divesites, it is once again time for us to bid farewell to the City Island and head north to Thailand. Before sailing for those exotic waters, we did have time for one more farewell trip, The Hari Raya long weekend to Anambas islands, Seven Skies and Igara Wrecks, which turned out to be the perfect way to say goodbye to our friends here in Singapore.

Oct 23, 2012

Seven Skies Wreck, 19-21 Oct 2012

Saturday morning, Seven Skies wreck, thirty-four meters below the surface, clear blue waters, a ripping current and an ocean teeming with pelagic marine life: rainbow runners, barracudas, jacks, trevallies and tunas, all enjoying a frenzied attack upon a dense ball of bait fish who school close to the wreck in a vain attempt to protect themselves from the constant attacks of the torpedo like hunters of the sea. What a fantastic way to start the weekend!

Oct 16, 2012

Seven Skies Wreck, 12-14 Oct 2012

Our much loved Divemaster couple: Michael and Melanie Smith were back from their pilgrimage in Northern Spain to expertly guide our divers this weekend. Additionally, another important member of the White Manta family attended with his own family: Chris Phillips. His nieces; Emily and Jessica took the PADI Open Water and Advanced Open Water courses, respectively. Chris & Maria Phillips also brought along their young son: Zacharias; he and his carer Brenda were non-divers along with Katharina Hegi, mother of the Hegi family including husband Martin, and son & daughter; Oliver and Julia. They were each to attain their Advanced Open Water certificate. It was quite a family affair!

MV White Manta Open House evening 10 Oct 2012

We hosted another Open House evening early in October, inviting our friends, and theirs, to join us in some nice food and conversation in the lovely space of MV White Manta.

Oct 8, 2012

Seven Skies Wreck, 5-7 Oct 2012

First weekend trip in October on MV White Manta was full of expectations to see the big fish that can be a feature of our trips towards the end of the season. We embarked to the ‘hotspot’ as soon as we left TMFT eager to get an early start and ‘catch the first worm’. Sadly it was not to be, luck was not on our side, the big fish didn’t make an appearance.

Tioman & Jack Rock, 28-30 Sep 2012

Do you remember your first dive? Are you able to re-imagine all the feelings of nervous excitement and anticipation that precedes your first descent into the depths of the ocean? For a lot of us that first glimpse of a new world is enough to hook us for life, addicted to exploring a weightless world that seems so alien from the distant world back on land.

Sep 25, 2012

Seven Skies Wreck, 21-23 Sep 2012

Only two words really needed from this weekends’ trip report..... WHALE SHARK!! Yes, those lucky divers who were able to tear themselves away from Singapore's F1 weekend were treated to, not one, but two! incredible dives with a very friendly and inquisitive Whale Shark at the Igara wreck, providing a very special end to a fantastic weekend diving onboard MV White Manta.

Sep 17, 2012

Pulau Aur, 14-16 Sep 2012

One of the great pleasures of working aboard the MV White Manta here in Singapore is that we often have the chance to welcome back returning guests numerous times throughout the season, guests we like to consider friends!

Sep 7, 2012

Anambas Islands & Jack Rock, 7-9 Sep 2012

Although it seems like only yesterday since the White Manta returned to Singapore, amazingly, we’ve been back for over two months! As usual we have been running our weekend trips to Tioman and Anambas islands sometimes including the Seven Skies and Igara wrecks. A big thank you to all of our guests who have joined us so far this year, it is always a pleasure to have you aboard and a privilege to enjoy some fantastic weekend diving with you all!
